Senate Minority Leader John Sampson’s will cost the state at least $70,207 in insurance costs alone after causing severe damage to several high-end luxury vehicles, according to a Senate source familiar with the numbers.

Sampson, D-Brooklyn, was uninjured after losing control of his car on the morning of July 13, plowing his Senate-issued Ford Taurus into a parked car that in turn resulted in damage to three additional vehicles, according to a police accident report obtained by Capital Tonight.

According to the police report, Sampson was traveling on East 108 St. when a “cat/raccoon” ran across the road. Sampson swerved to avoid the animal, but kept his foot on the gas instead of pressing the brake.

The 2012 Taurus, valued at $35,491, is a total loss.

Sampson’s accident also cause significant damage to a 2008 CL 550 Mercedes, with damage at this point estimated at $16,028. A 2007 BMW 328i also sustained damage, costing $7,610 to repair. A 2002 Toyota Corolla was declared a total loss, with a cash payout of $7,321.

Meanwhile, a fourth vehicle, that has gone unreported until now, was also damaged. But cost estimates for the 2004 Cadillac that was hit were not immediately available.

Sampson and the owenrs of the vehicles were offered rental cars while the repairs are being made.
