INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Jan. 17, 2015) -- The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is investigating nearly a dozen reports of cars break-ins on the northeast side of the city.
The police reports say all of the crimes happened Friday night along 82nd Street and 86th Street near Castleton Square Mall and on Allisonville Road.
Between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., ten different vehicles were targeted. The reports say they were parked at popular restaurants and bars.
Laura Christoph just learned about what happened.
"I just bought a brand new car on Monday, so that's very concerning for me," Christoph said.
In some of the cases, items like laptop computers, a gym bag and a flat hair iron were stolen. It's enough to make Christoph think twice about her own protection.
"Definitely gonna think about that a little bit more now when I leave my car," she said. "But I don't leave anything valuable in there."
Darrell Allen doesn't either.
"I never leave my cell phone or anything in there. I have a stereo system in there, that's about it. I take my school laptop out with me," Allen said.
Nationwide Insurance says you shouldn't leave your purse or wallet in plain view. Briefcases and backpacks should be hidden. The insurance giant also says keep your cell phones, MP3 players and other electronics on you and if you're shopping, put the shopping bags in your trunk.
