Subaru WRX Insurance Rates

Since the Subaru WRX is an affordable and fun car, perspective owners often want to know what insurance rates they can expect. While I can’t tell you the exact cost of insurance for your Subaru WRX or WRX STI, I can give you an idea on how much insurance is and why it’s more than your average vehicle.

How much is insurance for a Subaru WRX or STI?

For an adult driver over the age of 25 you can expect to pay about $80 – 120 / mo. for full coverage insurance. Those of you with points like wrecks, tickets, etc. can expect to pay $120 – 250 / mo. for full coverage. Lastly, those that are male and under 25 can expect to pay considerably more depending on your driving record and choice in coverage.

Why are Subaru WRX insurance rates higher than say, a Honda Accord with a V6?

Insurance rates are determined by data points. Insurance companies look at the rate of incidents, cost to repair the vehicle, total value, and more. This is why insurance rates for the WRX are higher than say, a Honda Accord with the same power. It’s because people tend to be in more accidents, and do more damage to the car and other assets (cars, trees, homes, etc.).

How can I find out how much more a Subaru WRX will cost me over my current vehicle?

Call your insurance provider and ask them for a quote. They can give you an idea on what risk rating the car is, which is used to determine the cost of your insurance coverage. They can provide this over the phone pretty quickly.

What if I’m a female driver, do those insurance rates apply to me?

The risk rating is still the same as it’s fixed per vehicle, however the only real gap in coverage costs is for young males vs. young females (Age 16 – 25). Males will pay considerably more until they hit a certain discount based on age, typically. The best bet for you is to call your insurance company for a rate quote as the discounts vary by insurance provider.

When do I need to carry full coverage insurance for my Subaru?

Personally, I carry full coverage for my STI because of these simple facts.

  1. It’s a valuable asset. If I total it in an at-fault incident I do not want to be out the value of the vehicle. ($30,000+) If your WRX cost you more than say, $8000, you really should heavily consider full coverage. If it is over $15,000 then you REALLY should have full coverage.
  2. It is not cheap to repair. There are a lot of items on the WRX / STI that add up in a collision. Wheels, brakes, suspension, are all easily damaged beyond body panels and those are not cheap to replace on the STI.

If you have a lien on the vehicle (from a car loan) then you absolutely will need full coverage. It’s almost guaranteed to be part of the loan agreement.

How do I lower my insurance rates for my WRX or STI?

You can lower rates by increasing deductibles, lowering medical coverage, and applying secondary discounts like a student status discount or good grades discount. The best thing to do is to schedule a sit down with your insurance rep and have them go over your coverage, how it works, and ultimately how it affects your insurance rates.

Bear in mind some states, like Texas, have a minimum requirement for coverage by law. This minimum generally applies max payout amounts if you were to hit someone and cause an injury, destroy property, or injure yourself or a passenger. Insurance in this case is your FIRST line of defense to avoiding being sued! That $10 / mo you save today might cost you $100,000 if you seriously injure someone.
