Hello! Through various circumstances, I haven’t used my no claims discount for 2 years & 9 months, but now I find out that insurance companies will not honour it. Is there a particular company that will accept my old discount, even at a reduced number of years? I had 9 years NCD from LV, although the claim-free period began in the mid-90s.
There was one I was looking at at the weekend which asked for NCD up to 3 years old. It may have been Direct Line or Aviva.
IIRC you could also try Adrian Flux. It may be possible to take out cover for three months to refresh your NCD, then go back to the market for an annual contract to get the lowest premiums.
Co-Op was mentioned some time back. The issue is the companies that do allow over 2 years may not be cheap anyway. A short term policy may not get you the renewal with the full no claims re-instated.
Last time I did it was in the 90s with London & Edinburgh, so it may not be possible now. Worth investigating though.
Many thanks, I’ll try them all.
a decent broker might be able to help too, also worth trying your previous insurer As mentioned above, the couple of companies that accept three year old ncb might not be the cheapest but if they are rediculously expensive then taking out a policy with them and cancelling after a month should generate a new current NCB statement that all insurers will accept.
Cancelling within the 14 day cooling off period rather than after a month would be more money saving!
yeah, but it doesn’t seem quite right or fair to use an insurer just as a way of refreshing NCB so I’d probably give them more than a couple of weeks of premiums. Also, if you cancel in the first week they might just send you your old NCB proof back
I wish you luck with this. I wasted 9 years NCD which was 2 years & 7 days old (unused) and none of the insurers or brokers I tried would accept it. I had a car which was on full NCD. I bought a 2nd car (project) and when it was done I insured that on a separate new policy via a specialist broker. They agreed to mirror my 9 years NCD which I was still using on the first car as an introductory bonus. A while later I sold car 1 after the insurance had lapsed. Carried on insuring car 2 for a couple more years. Sold car 2 and cancelled policy. Didn’t buy another car for about 2 months, but when I went to insure it all they would recognise was the 3 years NCD i had built up on the policy I had on car 2. With the benefit of hindsight, I should have just used the bonus from car 1 policy on car 2 after I sold it, but I forgot. As I said, the bonus from car 1 was 2 years & 7 days old when I went to insure car 3 and nobody was interested in any discretion, the bar stewards.
Nevertheless it’s legal! And this is a moneysaving website. (And insurers are notoriously unfair anyway, so this is another "consumer’s revenge" that this site champions all the time.) Cancelling during the cooling off period will be far less than half the price of cancelling after a month!
, You were badly advised. Until recently aviva have taken 3 year old NCD. Since they stopped, the co-op have been taking 3 year old NCD, and still do.
Bummer, oh well, too late now
CIS accept three years old NCD. They may be expensive but but the OP only needs to go with them for a year, at renewal he has current NCD he can use with the entire market.
try and keep up at he back, the rest of the class has read posts #7-11
As mentioned above, the couple of companies that accept three year old ncb might not be the cheapest but if they are rediculously expensive then taking out a policy with them and cancelling after a month should generate a new current NCB statement that all insurers will accept. Does anybody know if this will actually work? Has anybody tried it? My husband built up 4 years no claims. We had to sell our car and now 2 years and 1 month later most insurance companies are telling him he has to start his NCD all over again. CoOp and Aviva will insure him with up to 3 years lapsed no claims however want to charge £1000 instead of other companies charging £250 if he still had his 4 years NCD. If he were to take out a policy with CoOp or Aviva then cancel after a month, will they issue him a new 4 years NCD statement which he can take to cheaper insurers? Also I know this is a long shot but he has been driving hire cars during our 2 years of not owning a car. Does this count for anything?
No to both – the policy must be in force for a full year, if not any discount will evaporate. Daily hire car insurance has no bearing – this is a block policy covering any hirer, not an individual. If he had an accident in a hire car, he would still have to disclose it regardless. Many brokers are happy to provide a jump start discount (called ‘introductory’) for those of previous good standing and no accidents.
nah, cancel a policy mid term and it generates a new statement of NCB dated when you cancelled
Don’t see how – it would depend on the company. Of policies I cancelled, none provided evidence of entitlement on cancellation. I had to explicitly ask for it, and when I did, it hadn’t incremented for the reasons stated previously.
obviously it wouldn’t increment as you hadn’t done a full year but you would get a new statement of NCB restating what you had when the policy started (which is the point of this thread)
Spoke to the Co today, they won’t entertain a 2-year-old NCD, so it looks like I’ll have to try Aviva. Don’t want to, like, I hate their adverts.
I don’t believe Aviva take NCD older than 2 years now. It changed in November 2011. The Co-operative Insurance should take it Q: Do I need to provide evidence of my No Claim Discount? A: Yes, if you choose to take out a policy with us we will need you to provide evidence of your No Claim Discount. This proof will normally be your renewal invitation from your most recent UK insurer, showing the number of years No Claim Discount earned. We only accept original proof from UK insurers. The document must show: The number of years No Claim Discount earned The expiry date of your last insurance policy. We are unable to consider the following documents for proof of No Claim Discount: Photocopies or faxes Certificate of motor insurance Insurance quotations Statement of Facts Proof of No Claim Discount already used on another policy If the proof is over three years old.
Aaaaaallllll righty!!!! Just been on the phone to the Co, rather than their subsiduary, and they do take NCD up to 3 years old, so it’s game on! Thanks for your replies!
