Deer (WHO-HD)
DES MOINES, Iowa — The odds of Iowa drivers hitting a deer continue to rise.
State Farm Insurance ranks the state third in the U.S. for the most car-deer collisions. Iowans have a one in 68 chance of hitting a deer on the road.
That’s up 13-percent from last year when Iowa was ranked fourth in the nation.
Officials say the increase is both dangerous and costly
“If you have a deductible, you will have to pay your deductible first and then companies pay the balance after your deductible to repair your vehicle,” says Ralph Hesse, American Family Insurance agent.
State Farm says the national average cost from these types of accidents is over $4,000.
To help combat the rise in these numbers, cities like Des Moines and Urbandale have implemented urban bow hunting programs.
