LOGAN COUNTY, Okla. - Two men have been arrested in Logan county for allegedly ripping off several elderly victims.
Investigators say at least three people were defrauded by the roof repair scam and there could be more victims.
Don Streck says he paid two suspects $5,000 to repair the roof of an old storage building, but immediately noticed some shoddy craftsmanship.
"I kept telling him no way that was right. It was so thin it wasn't covering the cracks," said Streck.
To make matters worse, the suspects gave Don a bill of more than $10,000.
"I said there's no way, you can't double your bill," said Streck. "I was real upset that I got taken. I thought I knew better."
Investigators say John Carroll and Bartley Gorman routinely overcharged for work that wouldn't pass inspection or charged for work that never got done.
"If you looked at the work, you'd know it was a complete rip off," said David Pearce.
Pearce, a reputable roofer in Guthrie, helped sheriff's investigators inspect the suspect's work.
Investigators say there may be more victims, not just the ones from the small town of Marshall.
"They were in the area for three weeks. We don't believe they'd hang around if they weren't getting some business," said Logan County Sheriff Det. Greg Valencia.
"A lot of them aren't going to turn it in, they wouldn't know until the future," said Pearce. "They may not know it now."
"I don't see how they can live with themselves, ripping older people off," said Streck.
Both suspects posted bond and were released from jail.
Their brothers, Sean Gorman and James Carroll, are also wanted for questioning.
Sheriffs deputies say anyone who has done business with ether J.Carroll Asphalt or D&G General Contracting is asked to contact the Logan County Sheriffs Office.
Experts say in order to avoid falling victim to repair fraud, do your homework.
Make sure businesses have the proper licenses and insurance and check their reviews with places like the Better Business Bureau.
