The latest trend in car paint is the matte finish, where instead of a shine or a gleam, the light seems to absorb into the paint itself. Those who are old enough to remember have seen vehicles of yesteryear lose their luster over time to accomplish much the same effect, but today things have come full circle and matte is both trendy and sought after.

Here are some things to keep in mind if you are considering getting a matte paint job on your car.

1. Vinyl Wrap is a Cheaper Option

Often, the matte finished is achieved not with paint, but through wrapping with vinyl. A vinyl wrap can go over the car to deaden the shine and give the same non-reflective look that a matte paint job will give. This option can work with your existing paint color, and will run you hundreds if not thousands of dollars less than getting a new paint job. It’s a much idea to save your money for .

2. If You’re Brave, You Can Do it Yourself

There are sites that proclaim that even a novice painter can achieve the matte finish on their car. Though getting a matte finish is not very different at all than a regular car paint job, it’s probably best to leave that particular job to the professionals unless you’re really sure you know what you’re doing.

It is not recommended to try and attempt doing the vinyl wrapping yourself, since there is so much precision and detail that goes into wrapping a car this way. Getting a wrap matte job is already much less expensive than a new paint job, so just quit while your ahead and again, leave it to the pros.

3.  Scratches Can Stink

With a matte paint finish, it is more difficult and expensive to fix any scratches on the paint job. The old standby of buffing it out doesn’t really work here. Also, if there is a dent or scratch that gets fixed, it is very difficult to match the specific sheen of the paint exactly, more so than for regular non-matte paint jobs.

Is matte paint just a car fad or will it be around for years to come? That’s hard to say. Only time will tell, but in the meantime dealers and shops are coming out with an ever widening range of matte paint colors to choose from.

4. Know How to Maintain Your Matte Finish

A matte finish is a little different to keep up and care for than a regular, glossy paint job. Make sure that you clean any bug splatter off as quickly as possible. Also, avoid using waxes to protect the finish because they could destroy the un-shininess of your matte finish quite thoroughly. Any kind of abrasive polish may not leave it shiny, but it could destroy the specific finish of your car by altering it.

A matte finish on your car also needs to be protected by a special sealant in order to keep it looking good.

Remember to keep these tips in mind if you are considering getting a matte finish car.
