Ah the good old days. Where you had a whopping four T.V channels to choose from, your dad sported a killer ‘stache and a meal at a restaurant cost you nothing more than a few cents.
Okay, so salaries were a lot less back then, and food prices have undergone some pretty intense inflation, but it’s still interesting to look back at when you could get a T-Bone steak for less than R2. Check out these vintage menus from the 70s, 80s and 90s:
Holy cow, nothing on this menu is over R3! Steak for less than R2, prawns for under R1 and burgers for 50c!
So prices seemed to have increased on average about a R1 per meal from the 70s to the 80s. A Wimpy cheeseburger is like R40 today, in 1983 it only cost R2.30!
We’re not sure where or when this menu comes from, only that you could get an ‘Aristocratic Hamburger With French Fries’ for 25c back then.
Nando’s has always been on the more pricey side as far as take-aways go, I wonder if the R3.10 for a large chips was considered expensive back then?
